Tips to Handle Tantrums

Tantrums are explosions of emotion from your toddler, some result in anger, while others are distress related. These tantrums are normal developmental behaviours for children ages 1-3 years.

It is estimated by expert research that tantrums occur at least once a week in 50-80% of children and 1 in 5 two year olds have two or more tantrums per day.

Usually tantrums are a result of learning a new skill or a child’s inability to express emotions such as frustration or anger. Tantrums can happen at any moment, however there are normally triggers such as:

  • tiredness
  • stress or frustration
  • not getting what they want
  • hunger

Tips on dealing with tantrums:

  • Ignore if you can, be aware of their triggers and try and reduce these triggers where possible.
  • Keep your child and yourself calm
  • Help your child learn emotions
  • Enable your child to work out what behaviour is acceptable
  • Lead by example
  • When tantrums arise try calming activities
  • Distraction methods, these can be toys or something to look at such as a book or painting
  • Giving you child choice, pick out two outfits and let your child pick one
  • If your child is 2 years or over try time outs, set a designated area in your house for this and stick to the same routine of discipline every time your child has a tantrum. Time outs are great if done in a calm manner as they take the child away from the situation giving them they opportunity to calm down.
